Breaking: 'No right' Supreme Court takes a strict stance on Justice Gangopadhyay's interview

The Supreme Court has summoned an affidavit from the Calcutta High Court regarding the interview of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay in Bengali media. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has directed the Registrar General of Calcutta High Court to submit the affidavit by next Friday.

On Monday, the Supreme Court said in strict terms that no judge can give an interview to the media about any matter pending in the court. He does not have that right.

Referring to Kuntal Ghosh's letter recently caught in the recruitment corruption case, Justice Gangopadhyay said that Trinamool Congress All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee may be interrogated by the CBI. Abhishek went to the Supreme Court to challenge that order. On April 13, the Supreme Court also gave a stay order. In his petition, Abhishek claimed that the Trinamool leader was not a party to the case in which Justice Gangopadhyay asked him to be interrogated. Also, Abhishek claimed that Justice Gangopadhyay's negative attitude towards Abhishek was revealed in the interview he gave on an electronic channel last September.

The subject of Justice Gangopadhyay's interview came up during the hearing of that case on Monday. The bench of Chief Justice Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha took a strict stance on it. The Supreme Court has directed the Registrar General of Calcutta High Court to directly ask Justice Gangopadhyay whether he gave an interview on that electronic channel. Then the affidavit has been ordered to be submitted to the Supreme Court on Friday.
