"We will all return our medals", was the big announcement of the wrestlers sitting on Dharna
The wrestlers who are on strike against the President of the Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh are not willing to back down. The adamant wrestlers have now reached the stage of returning the medals, demanding the arrest and resignation of the union president.
"All these people will return their medals," women's wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was involved in the strike, said on Thursday. The announcement by the sit-in wrestlers came at a time when the Delhi Police filed a case against Sangh president and BJP leader Brijbhushan Sharan Singh for sexual harassment. The protesting wrestlers say their strike will end only when the police arrest the union president and send him to the penitentiary.
Talking to the media, Vinesh Phogat said, "His career is at stake." Meanwhile, Bajrang Punia, a wrestler involved in the strike, said, "He will be arrested in the case, we will leave. Our target is only Brijbhushan Sharan Singh."
Urging people to maintain peace, the wrestler said, "People want our protest to end. We don't expect such respect. This is the state of the country where women are being treated like this. If this is the case, then we return the medals." On Thursday, Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal also reached Jantar Mantar to meet the wrestlers sitting on dharna. After meeting the wrestlers, he said, "Their allegations are very serious. They have been abused by male policemen. Cases of sexual harassment are going on. No measures have been taken for their safety." Questioning the Delhi Police's action, Maliwal said, "Nobody has the guts to arrest Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. When I came here, I was dragged and thrown in a car. No matter how big a gangster Brijbhushan is, he needs to be arrested."
