Chocolate is on the decline across Europe

Muller, the maker of Cadbury, has announced the withdrawal of six Cadbury products, including Flake and Dairy Milk Buttons. Listeria is a type of bacteria, found in cold food, that can cause the rare infection 'listeriosis' in humans.

Although the infection is not serious for most people, Muller advised not to consume and return Cadbury products made in a particular batch. Other than that specific batch of Cadbury products, no other batch has been reported to be affected. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised caution on the following desserts:

Cadbury Dime Chocolate Dessert

Cadbury Crunchy Chocolate Dessert

Cadbury Flake Chocolate Dessert

Cadbury Dairy Milk Button Chocolate Dessert

Cadbury Dairy Milk Chunks Chocolate Dessert

Cadbury Heroes Chocolate Dessert

Among them, it is advised not to eat products dated May 17 for Flake and Crunchy Desserts and May 18 for the other four.

Ever since this announcement, panic has spread throughout Europe. Cadbury products are being removed from thousands of stores. Listeria infection is an illness (called listeriosis) caused by a foodborne bacterium, according to information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Listeria is caused by eating food contaminated with monocytogenes bacteria. Pregnant women and elderly people over the age of 65 are at the highest risk of contracting the disease, as the bacteria attack the immune system. The UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) has urged every consumer to check the expiry date of products on their website.

Symptoms of listeriosis are similar to the common flu. This can cause fever, muscle aches or pains, chills, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. The health agency states that the signs and symptoms of listeria infection depend on the body of the infected person. In rare cases, the infection can become more severe. It can cause serious complications like meningitis. Listeriosis increases the risk of miscarriage in pregnant women.
