Who will BJP send to Rajya Sabha from Bengal? BJP is dominant in three formulas to choose the candidate for the first time
Six Rajya Sabha MP posts will fall vacant from West Bengal next August. The victory of Trinamool candidates is guaranteed in all five. BJP in one. This is the first time BJP will be able to send an elected MP from Bengal to the Upper House of Parliament. But who will be the candidate? As the panchayat elections are coming up, the state or central BJP leadership is not discussing it right now.
However, the manner in which candidates can be selected has been hinted at in talks with BJP leaders. Despite not wanting to talk about it publicly, according to the insider of the BJP camp, the candidate may be selected in three formulas. This is what the three top leaders of the party want. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and All India President JP Nadda will take the final decision on whomever the state names. The name will be announced only after the decision of this trio.
A total of 16 people from the state can go to the Rajya Sabha based on the population and MLAs of Bengal. Now Trinamool has 14 MPs from Bengal.Of the remaining two, one is Pradeep Bhattacharya of the Congress and the other is Vikasranjan Bhattacharya of the CPM. Pradeep easily went to the Rajya Sabha as a Congress candidate twice in a row as Trinamool did not stop him. However, Vikas became a member of the Rajya Sabha as a candidate of the Left-Congress alliance.
Rajya Sabha elections are held in three parts in this state. Five seats in two sections and six seats in one section. With the strength of BJP, they can win only one candidate in five constituencies. But polling in six constituencies in August Apart from Congress Pradeep, the terms of five Trinamool MPs Derek O'Brien, Shanta Chhetri, Sukhendushekhar Roy, Sushmita Dev and Dola Sen expire in August. Out of these six, the BJP can send an MP to the Rajya Sabha in Pradeep's place. Because, after the victory of Byron Biswas in the recent Sagardighi in the Assembly, the Congress has only one MLA. The left is empty. On the other hand, the BJP with 75 MLAs on the books can easily win one candidate. Party leader Mamata Banerjee will decide whether the term of the five Trinamool MPs is expiring in August. However, the political circles are more focused on who will be the candidate of the BJP for the first time. According to BJP sources, three issues can be seen in the nomination of candidates. First, to fix the 'new leader' in the state. Someone may be chosen, who will take the reins of the state BJP in the coming days. The organizational training phase of the elected Rajya Sabha MPs will continue while Sukant Majumdar remains the state president.
Second, the BJP may look for someone who will act as a 'magnet' to the voters in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. There is no need for him to be a politician. Can be prominent in any other field. But he wants to have a good image with people of all walks of life.
There is also a third formula. Awarding an old leader of the party as Rajya Sabha MP. He may not be a resident of Bengal but also a Bengali living abroad. However, Modi-Shah objected to this 'award'. So the central leadership of BJP can nominate anyone who will benefit the party, not to 'please' anyone with an award.
