South Korea to introduce bill to ban dog meat
A lawmaker from the People's Power Party (PPP) proposed on Friday to outlaw butchery and the sale of dog and cat meat in South Korea. According to Yonhap news agency, the amendment to the Animal Protection Act, introduced by People Power Party representative Tae Yong-ho, allows the government to subsidize dog and cat meat businesses that voluntarily stop or switch businesses.Tae said, "In an era where 1.5 billion people keep animals, the culture of eating dogs and cats should be changed. As the so-called First Lady Kim Kyun Hee, the wife of the president, said, the ruling and opposition parties and the government should take the lead in protecting animal rights.
The First Lady has called for a ban on eating dog meat. In an interview in June, he noted that South Korea and China are the only major economies where people eat dog meat. The chief policymaker of the country's main opposition Democratic Party also said on Thursday that the party would push for special legislation banning the consumption of dog meat and helping people working in the dog meat industry to change jobs. Eating dog meat has declined dramatically in recent decades, amid perceptions that the tradition is becoming an international embarrassment. Still, proponents argue that people should have the freedom to choose what they eat.
