Why did Sharmila stop working with Rajesh Khanna even though the audience loved it?

Many viewers will still be moved by the dialogue “Pushpa, I Hate Tears”. Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna were the popular couple of Bollywood during the seventies and eighties. They acted together for the first time in 1969 in the film 'Aradhana'.

The film got huge popularity. Their chemistry in successful films like 'Amar Prem', 'Koti Patanga' impressed people, but at one point, Sharmila stopped working with Rajesh. But why?
