Union Minister Calls for Platform Action Against Viral Actor Deepfake Video

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has responded to a concerning deepfake video featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna, highlighting the need to tackle this damaging form of misinformation on digital platforms.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who serves as the Union Minister of State for Information Technology, conveyed the government's dedication, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to ensure the safety and trust of internet users. He pointed out the IT rules implemented in April 2023, outlining the legal obligations imposed on social media platforms. According to these rules, platforms must actively prevent the dissemination of misinformation and promptly remove such content when reported by users or government entities within 36 hours.

He also cautioned that failure to comply with these rules could result in legal action under "rule 7," allowing aggrieved individuals to take platforms to court under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
