The authorities also said that additional toll tax will be charged from April 1. As a result, the cost of traveling by car on national roads and highways is going to increase from next month i.e. from Saturday. It is known that the amount of toll tax is revised every year as per the National Road Pricing Rules of 2008. On average, the toll tax increases by 10.5 percent. However, toll tax revisions differ across countries.
At present there are total 599 highways in the country. Among them, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway saw the highest increase in toll tax, at 18 percent. Again, the toll tax on four-wheelers is going to increase by 14 percent, which means an increase of Rs. 5 per day. On the other hand, toll tax in Madhya Pradesh is set to increase by 7 percent. The National Highways Authority also reported that the total amount of toll tax collected on national highways was Rs 34,743 crore in the financial year 2022-23. It has collected at least 21 percent more toll than the amount collected in its previous financial year. Since 2018-19, a total of Rs 1,48,405.30 crore toll has been collected from the national highways of the country. Central government has introduced FASTag system to simplify the procedure of paying toll tax. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, a total of Tk 50,855 crore toll was collected from national and state highways in 2022 through this system.
