The Bleeding Goddess: Maa Kamakhya Devi

Ekta Singh: The Kamakhya Devi is renowned as the 'Bleeding Goddess' and the mythical womb of the Shakti is supposedly present in the 'Garvagriha' or sanctum of the temple. The holy Kamakhya Devi Temple is built on the Nilachal Hill and is located in the beautiful city of Guwahati in Assam, India, is one of the oldest and most revered centers of Kulachara Tantra Magic and the site of the Ambubachi Mela, an annual festival that celebrates the menstruation of the goddess. Also referred to as Kamrup-Kamakhya, this holy pagoda is considered one of the oldest among 51 Shakti Pithas and is dedicated to Maa Kamakhya Devi, one of the forms of shakti (Mother Goddess).

This holy Hindu temple attracts a lot of devotees from all over India. It is said that when the body of Sati was stabbed into several pieces by the 'Sudarshan Chakra' of Lord Vishnu, portions of her body fell into varied places each generating 'Shakti Peeth' which is believed to be extremely holy. Similarly, the yoni and the womb of Sati dropped in Pragjyotishpur of Assam, thereby giving rise to the Kamakhya Temple. In the month of Ashad (June), the Goddess menstruates for 3 days, and at this time, the Brahmaputra river near Kamakhya turns red. The Kamakhya temple then remains closed for 3 days and holy water is distributed among the devotees.

Symbolically, menstruation is believed to be the mark of shamanic and spiritual power. So, the deity and the temple are meant to be the celebration of this divine 'shakti' or power within every woman. However, this holy place still remains a mystery and continues to be one of the vital Shakti temples.
