With the idea of a painless death penalty instead of hanging, the Center decided to form a committee in the Supreme Court
The center has started thinking about whether a new method can be used in the execution of the death penalty instead of cruel and painful methods like hanging. On Tuesday, Attorney General R Venkatormani told the Supreme Court that the Center is going to form a committee to think about the matter.
An RG has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding the cancellation of the death sentence of the criminals sentenced to death. Petitioner Rishi Malhotra claimed that the Law Commission report itself said that hanging someone to death is cruel and painful. So criminals should be given a painless death sentence as an alternative. Alternatively, execution methods such as injection, firing squad, or electric chair should be considered.
The Supreme Court is taking this claim of the plaintiff very seriously. In the March 21 hearing, the division bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud also asked whether it is possible to get the information of any relevant research besides advising the Center to think about it. In response, the Center said today that the Center has started the process of forming a committee to find other painless alternatives to the death penalty. However, it will be possible to tell when the committee will start working after the summer vacation.
After hearing this statement of the Centre, the Supreme Court said that the next hearing of the case will be in July.
Capital punishment by hanging in India is a British-era practice. The fact that the Supreme Court is seriously thinking about changing the procedure has been understood in the previous hearing. It is understood from the position of the center that the center is looking at the matter with great importance.
