Delhi Police Arrest Deepfake Creator Targeting Actor Rashmika Mandanna
Delhi police have apprehended the individual responsible for creating a deepfake video featuring popular actor Rashmika Mandanna. The video, which gained traction on social media in November, featured British-Indian influencer Zara Patel, with her appearance seamlessly altered to mimic that of Ms. Mandanna. This incident prompted widespread concern and calls for increased regulations on social media platforms. Ms. Mandanna expressed her distress, describing the experience as "extremely scary," shedding light on the vulnerability individuals face due to the misuse of technology.
In response to the viral deepfake, the Indian government issued an advisory to social media platforms, emphasizing legal provisions and potential penalties associated with the creation and dissemination of deepfakes. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar met with social media platforms in December to review their progress in combating misinformation and deepfakes, emphasizing the need for 100% compliance. Deepfake technology, utilizing artificial intelligence to manipulate audio and visual elements, has become a growing concern globally, with governments urging social media platforms to take more aggressive measures in identifying and removing such content from their platforms.Grand Opening of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya Draws Support from Bollywood and South Indian Celebrities
